We Indians seem to be over-obsessed & over-expressive about statistics, records & numbers right from childhood, viz.
- Ranks, Marks, Percentages, CGPA
- Literacy Rates , Income Levels
- GDP of the nation
- Above all – cricket scores & player statistics
Business cannot be considered in this discussion, because firstly it is livelihood for each one of us, and secondly it is does have to do a lot about numbers, statistics for sure !
However, there certain things of truly utmost importance, have been conveniently evaded or rather camouflaged by our craze with attaching ‘NUMBERS’ to every possible aspect.
The latest example of the above is yesterday’s decision on 6th accused in the Delhi rape case being declared as a minor owing to his PHYSICAL AGE
Now, all of us are well aware about the rapid pace of modernization, amazing advancements in technology & easy access to information, frequent use social media over the last few years.
It won’t be wrong to state that on an average, the mental metabolism rate of today’s generation is almost double the physical growth. (The obsession with numbers continues !!)
The physical age of a person appearing on one’s Birth Certificate is now just a number, to be taken into account only during preparation of key documents viz. PASSPORT, DRIVING LICENCE, PAN CARD, etc or perhaps before entering into an alliance, or worse cum worse, getting legally drunk !
However, when it comes to a serious issue like crime, the INTENT of crime is way above all other factors.
Some of us may perhaps be quick enough to justify theft or murder (very rare cases though) as CIRCUMSTANTIAL ACCIDENTAL, IRRESPONSIBLE, IMMATURE, provided relevant evidences or witnesses are available
However, PHYSICAL ASSAULT to a woman, in the worst possible manner, leading to her painful death is definitely INHUMANE, (forget the doer), and cannot be justified !
For instance, imagine a bloody pervert molesting / assaulting a woman just couple of hrs, mins or secs before his 18th birth date. As per our RECORD BASED SYSTEM, he shall still be entitled to the privilege of being a minor,
Secondly, given our expertise in corruption, some of us would even get away b birth certificates being modified / tampered with. Won’t be surprised, if a minor’s defense even comes up with the justification of being possessed by an EVIL SPIRIT, while performing such a heinous act
Sorry to say, but we have been using our own LOOP HOLES to create more of them through these years.
This SAB CHALTA HAI attitude is literally driving us to dogs at least in terms of law & order in the country.
It’s high time we follow a logical & practical approach rather than following theories / numbers blindly.
Common sense says that scientific research is also based on theories, with a view to innovate / improve upon the results rather than just beating around the bush.
It’s PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE that creates a RECORD, and not the other way round !
